First President

Did you know that George Washington was unanimously elected the first President of the United States on February 4, 1789?

Washington was elected to the office of President and John Adams was elected as the Vice President.  President Washington was the only president elected with 100% of the electoral vote.  Congress voted to pay Washington a salary of $25,000 a year.  Washington, who was already a wealthy man, declined the salary.  At the assistance of Congress, Washington finally accepted the salary, aware that everything he did would be set as precedence.

Washington was not a member of any political party.  His greatest love was that of farming.  President Washington served two terms before retiring to his home Mount Vernon.
