Marines Go Ashore

On February 19, 1945 the United States Marines went ashore at Iwo Jima.  American troops went ashore in 100 landing boats. They made a successful landing on Iwo at 8 A. M.

The invading Marines fought above ground. The defending Japanese fought from below ground.  The battle was won by the foot soldier.  The United States Marines raised the flag on Mount Suribachi.  The Medal of Honor was given to 22 Marines who fought in the battle of Iwo Jima.
