Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Did you know the first St. Patrick’s Day parade held in New York City was on March 17, 1762?  There are over 100 St. Patrick’s Day parades held in the U.S. and only approximately 30 held in Ireland.

There are over 36 million people in the United States who claim to be of Irish descent.  The residents of Massachusetts claim 24% of their population is of Irish ancestry.  There are four cities in the United States with the name of Shamrock in their title.

Corned beef and cabbage will be served in many households and restaurants on St. Patrick’s Day in the United States.   The City of Chicago dyes it’s river green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.  School children, Irish or not, in the U.S. wear green so they don’t get pinched on this day.  St. Patrick’s Day symbols include the four-leaf clover, pot-o-gold and the leprechaun.
