Maryland Becomes A State

Maryland became the 7th state in the U.S. on April 28, 1788.

Maryland was settled in 1634.  Francis Scott Key wrote the words to the “Star Spangled Banner”  during the British bombardment of Fort McHenry.  Maryland’s nickname is the Free State.  It’s capital is Annapolis but its most populated city is Baltimore.

Maryland is the home of some great universities among them are Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. Naval Academy and the University of Maryland.  Well known residents have included Billie Holiday, Thurgood Marshall, Harriet Tubman, Frank Perdue and Babe Ruth.  Maryland is also known for the extensive seafood that comes from the Chesapeake Bay.
