The Final Frontier?

Today, American Coin Treasures’ celebrates Alan B. Shepard, Jr.’s birthday.  The NASA astronaut was born on November 18, 1923 in New Hampshire.  Shepard was the second person and the first American to travel into space.  He was the fifth person to walk on the moon.  While on the moon, he hit two golf balls.

Alan Shepard was also a United States Naval Academy graduate, a World War II veteran and a successful businessman.  He received many awards including the Navy Distinguished Service Medal and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.

For Shepard the ride through space and the walk on the moon was not the final frontier. Shepard owned and operated a private company, co-authored a book and raised three daughters.

Happy Birthday, Alan B. Shepard Jr.!
