Did you know that President Ronald Reagan put aside the third week in April for the country to celebrate coins?
Proclamation 5027 was created by President Reagan in 1983 to help foster the public’s interest in coin collecting. Here is part of the written proclamation,”Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the week beginning April 17, 1983, as “National Coin Week” and call upon the people of the United States to observe this week with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
This year the National Coin Week theme is “Coin and Country: Celebrating Civic Service.” The week’s theme is in honor of the 50th anniversary of the JFK half-dollar and President Kennedy’s speech, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”
